Healthy Weight Loss: Size Does Matter

Posted by admin under healthy cooking

Most people look into the mirror and probably think that they could use to lose a little more weight. A little flab here and there could be eliminated and those extra pounds from that party should be lost ASAP. But how much should you lose?

Losing weight is not just a matter of making the fat and flab disappear when you want to. You’re a human being, not just some clay statue to be scraped and molded. However, this is no excuse for not losing weight the healthy way. And as they say, there’s no time like the present to begin.

For obese people or those whose weight is 20% more than the standard weight for their height and bone structure, it is imperative to start now. Even a decrease in 5-10% of one’s current weight is said to lower the risks of heart ailments, respiratory diseases, high blood pressure, arthritis, diabetes and even cancer in obese people.

Obesity nowadays is not just a fashion or social faux pas anymore. It is just not good for the body. There’s such a thing as malnourishment and big bone structure, too. Fat may be the main culprit behind obesity but it also involves an excess in the body weight regardless of the components.

According to the Body Mass Index, men should be within the range of 25- 29.9 while women should have numbers from 18.5- 24.9. Anyone above 30 should think twice before reaching out for that second serving.

Food diets and all sorts of other diets involving ingesting herbal pills or tonics have become quite popular nowadays. However, most of them are not clinically proven or nutritionally balanced. Safe to say, the only real way to lose those extra pounds is to leave the old life of eat- what- you- want and turn to a healthy lifestyle.

Changes in one’s diet should not be abrupt, as this may make matters worse. As they always say, when in doubt about these kinds of things, consult your doctor or nutritionist. The diet is perhaps the most difficult thing to change but only if you make it that way. There are two rules when choosing a menu: first, control your calories through portions and quality; and second, don’t eat what you can’t stomach for long.

The rationale for these two rules is that healthy weight loss is a gradual process involving everything about you- physically, mentally, psychologically, etc. If you don’t like the taste of certain “recommended” foodstuffs, don’t force yourself. In the end, you’ll just grow sick of it and give up altogether. Most dieters don’t get it during their first try so don’t be afraid to mix and match. Here are a couple of tips that may help:

Substitute low- fat varieties for your favorites or staples- the market is saturated with these products. Instead of whole milk, for example, use low fat milk or cream.

Have a diverse range of foods included in your menu. When you’re raising a family too, involve them in your health program as to avoid tempting apparitions of brownies inside the refrigerator. Meat eaters should also know their veggies. Rewarding yourself is fine, just don’t overdo it; better yet, eat “guiltless” goodies. After all, you’re trying to be healthy.

Another way to remove those excess salts and fats from the meal is to remove the sources of additives when cooking. It wouldn’t hurt to experiment with herbs instead of the usual salt, sugar and butter routine. Who knows, you could be the next master chef on the block.

If possible, condition your body to eat a certain amount at a specific time. It would be better to scatter eating portions around the clock over eating at one full go. Savor the little servings that you have instead of thinking about how full or hungry you are. This way, the intervals will allow the body to register that you have enough blood sugar in your system already. It will prevent feelings of deprivation and splurging.

Size and quantity does matter. That’s why you want to lose weight, right? But being healthy does not equal to being thin. It’s useless to eat a dozen low- calorie crackers at one sitting since those calories will only pile up. However, some foods especially those rich in fiber provide more bulk for their size, thus satisfying hunger cravings. These include fruits and vegetables.

Eating healthful food alone will not guarantee much weight loss. It takes a combination of physical exertion to utilize the nutrients and calories you have at hand. The body will adapt so there should be an effort to combat the efficient energy scheme your body will implement once the drop in calories start. The answer? Exercise.

If your reasoning goes along the lines of not having the time or energy left to exercise, you are not serious about being healthy. Forget about strenuous sports if you don’t like them, exercise can be as simple as walking around while shopping, polishing floors or climbing the stairs. Strenuous exercise without proper supervision will only be stressful and result to over-eating. Simple aerobics can do wonders for the figure and the psyche. The endorphins released will make you happy and when you’re happy, it’s easier to stick with the program and avoid backtracking into the couch potato life before.

Losing weight is as hard as a block of granite. When done consistently and correctly, that block can be turned into the healthiest and sexiest sculpture around. Just don’t forget that when you take care of your body, your body will take care of you.

Culinary Cooking Schools and What They Teach

Posted by admin under cooking

Culinary cooking schools prepare you for a job in the culinary industry by providing you with the knowledge and skills you will need in the field. In order to properly prepare you, there are a number of subjects that will be covered in the curriculum at any reputable cooking school.

Basic food production skills: Before you can learn the more specialized skills of the culinary arts, you have to know the fundamentals. Therefore, most cooking schools begin their degree programs with one or more classes on basic food production. These courses may seem like nothing more than what you mother taught you, but they ensure that you are ready to move on to the next level of skills.

Basic nutrition: In order to work with food, you have to know what it is made of, and how our bodies use it. An understanding of nutrition goes behind simply knowing that calories are a measurement of the energy gained from food, and that this energy comes in the forms of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Our bodies also have need of specific vitamins and minerals, which are found in different foods in varying levels. Even the most basic understanding of nutrition will help you better plan meals, by giving you a guide by which to choose the components of any one meal. Therefore, most culinary cooking schools include in their degree programs at least one course in basic nutrition.

Viniculture: Viniculture is the technical term for the production of wine, including the growing of the grapes used to make it. Culinary cooking schools typically include the subject of winemaking in their coursework. Students will learn everything from the different grape plants used to make different flavors of wine, how the timing at which the grapes are picked affects the flavor of the wine, and other important information about how grapes are cultivated and used to make wine.

Cultural and international cuisine: Not all food tastes the same or is made the same way. In fact, cultural and international cuisines or food that comes from different cultures or countries, is often quite popular. In order to prepare students for the possibility of working for an establishment that serves cultural cuisines, most cooking schools offer courses on a variety of different types of cuisine.

Safety and sanitation: Like many other industries, food service establishments are required to follow certain safety and sanitation regulations. Working in a safe environment protects workers from unnecessary dangers, and maintaining cleanliness in the kitchen keeps both the workers and the customers from getting sick. In order for these regulations to work effectively, food service workers need to know what they are and how they affect their jobs. Therefore, most cooking schools require one or more courses in the subject in order for a student to earn their degree.

Culinary cooking schools vary quite a bit in their curriculums, but the above course subjects are important parts of a good culinary education, and are usually included in a school’s degree program. Depending on the concentration of your studies, you might be required to take other, more specialized courses, as well.

Tofu is an ingredient that a lot of people are scared of which is a shame because it's a great source of non-animal protein. This week on Healthy Helpings TV, host Michelle Koen demystifies tofu, explaining the different kinds and how they can be used.

For our first recipe we'll be making a quick stir-fry. This is Michelle's everyday standby lunch. It uses pre-marinated tofu and soy bean peas, both of which are great sources of protein, the soy bean peas are also a great source of fiber.

Ever made a New Year’s Resolution only to be disappointed in yourself and back to your old habits by February? We’ve all been there!

We make a pact with ourselves to live a healthy lifestyle because we know that good eating habits will enhance our lives. Nobody doubts the ability of healthy eating habits to improve our health but not many have the will power to make the changes needed to create a new lifestyle unless they have help.

You can change your eating habits and have a healthier lifestyle without having to wreck your social status or have your friends turn and run. The biggest reason why people fail and don’t stick to this New Year’s resolution is that they expect to change overnight and become perfect. If you set your goals to high and make unrealistic expectations, you are setting yourself up to fail.

Here are some practice tips for eating healthy and forming good eating habits:

1. Tell Your Family and Friends

Plan a family night of making smoothies and let everyone know they are in for a fun night. Let them know why you are doing this. Tell them that everyone needs to have more fruits and vegetables in their diets. This will get everyone involved in a whole lifestyle change.

Don’t try doing it alone because you feel if you tell and then do your late night run to McDonald’s they will consider you to be a failure. You just might be pleased and surprised. Your family and friends will have respect for what you are working to accomplish and will be able to support you and hold you accountable.

Maybe get your husband to start doing the grocery shopping and have children start dinner – Miracles do happen.

2. Do everything you can to avoid the fast food restaurants in the beginning. It starts with small steps and the first one you may need to do is start cooking meals at home instead of resorting to a fast food restaurant. If we do go out to eat, we can make healthier choices from the menu.

It is very important when you make the decision to eat with health in mind that you avoid your triggers.

It is nearly impossible to change your eating habits when you visit a fast food joint often. The smell, the golden arches are all triggers that will dissolve your resolution to eat healthier. It is not a lack of will power that drives you to order a “Big Mac” and fries, much of the taste and aroma of American fast foods are chemically manufactured to elicit both emotional and physical responses.

Even just getting a smell of a McDonald’s burger causes you to feel hunger even when you’ve just finished eating. Everything that’s gone into their advertising is designed to make you associate the fast food with good times and great eating.

3. Take Small Steps: Poor eating habits are just as much an addiction as smoking or drinking. It is pounded into our subconscious our entire lives, and we fight it everyday. It may be the lack of time, or the social value it promises without having to slave in the kitchen that drives us to eat this type of food, but we have developed these types of eating habits to make our lives easier. The reality is they do more harm than good.

Changing your eating habits doesn’t have to mean you have to give up everything you love, or that you need to do all or nothing. The best we can do is to take a slow, steady approach to revamping our eating habits. Little steps that we can follow everyday. Sometimes small substitutions of healthy foods for those we know are unhealthy add up to a good start toward health.

Cooking in the Caribbean

Posted by admin under cooking

Caribbean cooking introduces all visitors to some truly distinctive flavors through the addition of spices and other ingredients like mangoes, coconut, lime, cassava, papaya, yam, guava, and peppers. Surprisingly, the use of limes in Caribbean cooking among the natives is not all that different from the way it is used in the United States. Lime is one of the most popular ways of marinating fish and a popular dish is Ceviche, which is seafood cooked with the aid of citric juices and seasoned with herbs and onions. Caribbean cooking is not merely delicious it is also unique from one island to another. Each island has developed its own style and technique of cooking food and the food in the Caribbean is as varied as the experience from island to the next.
The Bahamas is known for the conch recipes.

Cuba is famous for black beans and rice.

Jamaica is the home of jerk cooking and seasoning.

Barbados means fried fish and cou cou.

Puerto Rico comes closer to home with chicken and rice.

The French Caribbean is known for its cerole dishes and many similar french cooking methods.

Trinidad is the land of curries.

All Caribbean cooking involves herbs and spices of various types for seasoning. One such ingredient is tamarind that is in many ways similar to Worcestershire sauce in taste because it too has tamarind as one of the major ingredients. In fact, the use of spices in Caribbean cooking is truly diverse and amazing. Nutmeg flavors the desserts in the United States but in the Caribbean, this spice is mixed with other spices that are natively grown on the islands and this makes for a totally different flavor in Caribbean cooking. The jerk cooking of Jamaica gets its flavor from allspice while the island of Cayman has a chocolate cake recipe that includes some spicy peppers.

There are many common forms of spices used in Caribbean cooking but the trick is that though you will recognize flavors as a familiar taste the cooking will be subtle enough to feel unique to your taste buds. Caribbean cooking is full of delectable sauces that are made of sweet fruits like mango, papaya, and orange with spicy hot peppers. Dipping sauces in Caribbean cooking are made from mango, chili peppers, and melon.

In Caribbean cooking, coconut milk is the basis of several stews and sauces.

Last, and by no means the last, is the most favorite ingredient of Caribbean cooking that is used in marinades, desserts, sauces, and soups – rum.
