Everyone has different reasons for dieting and exercising such as toning muscles, weight loss, or strength training. Essentially, though, everyone who participates in any of these activities is looking at a different variation on a theme: living a healthier life. Eating right is an important part of being healthy, as is staying fit.

While eating right is vital to being healthy and having the energy to do the things that you want to do, it is not easy to eat everything that you should. It has been suggested that a person eat from five to seven small meals every day instead of three big ones, however it is hard to get all of the required vitamins and minerals into your body with just a few meals every day. That is why taking a multivitamin is a great way to boost your health and energy and to help to keep you on track in your healthy lifestyle.

Research suggests that many people’s diets fall short of key nutrients like vitamin E, vitamin C, vitamin D, magnesium and calcium. If you know where you might be shorting yourself in your diet, eating foods to make up for that deficiency is your best option. If that is not possible, look for a multivitamin that fills deficiencies that you know you have or think you might have.

Even children are jumping on board the vitamin train. Chewable, flavored vitamins have been available for decades, but in recent years children’s vitamins have been experiencing a revolution. Say goodbye to the Flintstone vitamins, and hello to vitamin gumballs and gummy bears that are just like candy to children, and help provide them with what their growing bodies need. Always keep these vitamins out of reach, though. The great taste and candy like appearance can cause children to sneak a few and overdose.

Even the healthiest eater may not be getting as much of the vitamins and minerals out of their food as they think. Simple processes like cooking vegetables (especially boiling them) or meats may actually drain many of the vitamins and minerals out of the food. All of your good nutrition may be going down the drain with the wastewater. Taking a multivitamin ensures that no matter how much boiling or cooking you do, your body will be able to suck up the nutrients that are missing from your diet whether you know it or not.

Multivitamins come in several forms for ease of use by consumers. Multivitamins can be bought as tablets (pills), capsules, softgels and liquids. Tablets are the hardest for your body to break down and absorb, while liquid multivitamins are the easiest. Capsules and softgels sit right in the middle, being neither very hard to break down, nor almost instant like liquids. The absorption rate is good, though. Remember, too, you get what you pay for. A cheap super market brand of multivitamins might sound good for your pocketbook, but it may not have a good balance of vitamins and minerals to supplement your current diet.

However you choose to go about picking the multivitamin for you, remember that taking them daily is key. Your health depends on what you ingest, so make sure that you put all of the building blocks in so that your body will be strong and healthy, and you will have all of the energy you need to thrive. Multivitamins are a powerful way to take your life into your own hands and boost your health, get sick less, have more energy and live healthier. It’s as easy as living well, and taking your vitamins.

Cooking Courses: Which Ones Work?

Posted by admin under cooking

I have a great working relationship with most of my co-workers and good friendships with three of them. It seems that even though we see each other daily it is hard to keep up with what is going on in each others lives. We make it a point to have lunch as often as possible or to go to a happy hour after work, but so often it seems that we end up talking about work.

The last time we went out to a happy hour we started talking about doing some type of activity together. One of my friends mentioned that she was going to sign up for some cooking courses offered through community education. She thought it might be fun if we would do this together. The cooking courses were to concentrate on making thirty minute meals that were above average in taste and presentation. We decided that this would be fun as well as helpful in our lives.

The first evening of the cooking courses found the four of us putting on hair nets and aprons. Of course we all thought this was quite funny. We knew we had joined a serious class when the instructor threatened to separate us. Instead of being a fun activity where we could enjoy each others company the cooking courses became quite stressful. The first night the instructor timed us as we cut up onions and vegetables for the stir fry dish that we were making. She had a timer with a bell along with a whistle to make sure we all dropped our knives when she said that the time was up.

At our first break we went outside to get some fresh air. One of the other students heard us talking about how serious the course was. She said that she had taken other cooking courses and that they had been a great deal of fun and more laid back. She thought that the instructor was filling in for someone else. We made it through the first night. I did learn a few ways to cut off time in meal preparation but I was not that excited about going back. At work the next day we all agree that we would go the next week and if things did not improve we would skip the rest of the cooking courses and spend the time having drinks and dinner.

The next week there was a different instructor for the cooking class. She was a great deal of fun and had all of us laughing as we prepared short cut meals that could be frozen for later use. The evening flew by. It is amazing the difference the personality of the instructor can have on how much you enjoy a class as well as on how much you learn. The rest of the cooking courses were taught by the fun instructor so we kept going and learned a great deal.

Happy Holidays! From now until January 1st you will most likely be eating three times the calories your body burns in just one day. That said, we should probably cut corners where we can — and I'm not talking about cakes!

Good habits to live by during this "season of splurging" is to avoid drinking your calories, cutting back on portions, and not going back for seconds. Notice how I'm not telling you to avoid the sweets? Cutting it out cold turkey — especially during the Holidays — may prompt you to completely lose your mind from sugar-deprivation, steal the entire pumpkin pie, and down it in two minutes while hiding out in the hall closet!

So instead of doing away with the sweet-stuff, watch this week's podcast and try whipping together this healthy dessert recipe that's both tasty and satisfying. If you love peanut butter, this one's for you!

Peanut Butter Protein Balls
Ingredients: 1 cup plain instant oats 1 cup honey 1 cup natural peanut butter (drained) 1 1/4 cup vanilla protein powder

What Cooking Schools Can Do For You

Posted by admin under cooking

There are many cooking schools out there, advertising their degrees in colorful brochures, energetic commercials, eye-catching advertisements, and comprehensive websites. But you may question whether a culinary degree really right for you. In fact, you might be surprised by the many ways in which an education from a culinary school can improve your life, at home as well as in your career.

A cooking degree can help you get a job. Perhaps one of the most obvious benefits of a cooking degree is to beef up your resume. A degree will improve your chances of getting many culinary or related jobs, everything from chefs to restaurant reviewers to food advertising specialists. Managers want these jobs to be filled with employees who really know the culinary arts.

A culinary education can help you qualify for a better job. You may have been bucking for a promotion with no luck. Getting an education from one of the top cooking schools shows your employer that you have the ambition and sense of responsibility necessary to perform a more difficult job. A degree can also help you pass over the unskilled positions altogether, hiring directly into upper level positions that fit your level of education.

More qualifications mean more money. Tell potential employers that you are worth it. Studies have shown that entry-level employees entering the work force earn more, on average, when they have a degree. Getting a degree from one of the top cooking schools allows you to increase your earning power by improving your credentials.

A better understanding of food and nutrition will help you feed your family. Your family benefits from your culinary education, too. Balanced nutrition is difficult to achieve, but extraordinarily important for good health, particularly in growing children. Most cooking schools will teach you the basics of nutrition, such as the vitamins, minerals and other nutrients our bodies get from food, as well as how to combine different foods to create a healthy, balanced meal.

Knowing how to cook well will help you save money. Convenience foods and eating out are the two major drains on your food budget. With a culinary education, you won’t need to rely on convenience and pre-packaged meals in order to eat well. You will be able to make meals from scratch that are better, healthier, and less expensive. And when you get the hankering for five star foods, you won’t have to pay restaurant prices for it, you’ll be able to make it right in your own kitchen.

Learning how to cook well can help you feel better about yourself. Self-confidence is a precious thing, and a culinary education can give it to you. Don’t be ashamed of your cooking skills, or lack thereof, any longer; go to school and learn how to cook in a way that you can be proud of. And if cooking has always been one of your passions and the job of your dreams, then make that dream a reality with a culinary degree.

While an education from one of the top cooking schools can’t give you everything you’ve always dreamed of, it can at least help you out a little along the way. So if you are asking yourself whether or not you should get a culinary education, perhaps the answer should be that you really don’t have anything to lose from the experience.
